NAME: Faed pa'Varuun
CANON: Original
POINT IN CANON: After being rescued from the gadakai scientists and returned to the rebel compound
AGE: late 60s, equivalently in his late 20s early 30s
APPEARANCE: Image and a full anatomical breakdown for the curious((nsfw in places)).
CANON HISTORY:
While from an earth standpoint it's modern day, off world it's your standard, futuristic, sci-fi type universe. Closer to a Firefly/Defiance sort of feel where everything is rugged and comforts are hard won unless you've come into a great deal of money.
There's the Coalition that's comprised of ambassadors from every sector of known space, including where Earth is from. While Earth is left to its own devices due to being underdeveloped, because of its location it falls under the jurisdiction of of the Magda Sector.
Communities have cropped up over time on 'fuel moons', which are pretty much intergalactic truck stops. There are bars and brothels and repair shops, generally unsafe places to be for long, even in the best parts of space, but also the best places to gather information.
There are thousands of races in the Coalition, and many more like humans that aren't technologically developed enough to travel far enough out to make contact. Once a race like that does, its presented with the opportunity to join the Coalition.
Faed is from an insectoid species from a planet called Gadakis. Once upon a time the gadakai were honorable warriors, looked at by the rest of the galaxy as noble peacekeepers. That all changed when a new Queen rose to power, and slowly they became anything but honorable. Recent generations have become twisted and violent, following their tyrannical queen without question. Now they've viewed as little more than pirates and bullies, terrorizing other races 'for the good of the empire'.
Their society has always been matriarchal, but its gotten to the point where after child reaches puberty, cocoons, and emerges with a distinct gender, males have their second set of arms removed. Even at such a young age, since they're required to take part in the mandated breeding programs. Each caste, designated by their carapace markings (striped, mottled, gloved, and solid), must report to a breeding center where they are given drugs that force the occurrence of a breeding cycle, and assigned a number of partners. This experience is often traumatizing.
A nameless resistance group has sprung up, hell bent on taking out the current queen and replacing her with one of their own. 'Queens' are female gadakai that pupate with wings when they hit puberty. They are extremely rare, and one of the purposes of the breeding programs is to make sure they're kept 'in family' so to speak.
The rebels started on a small colony of gadakai that survived defection and have been living in secret on their own in a way they hope to honor their true history. A queen was born to them and now they've taken it as a sign that they're meant to change the fate of their people, to make them something better than they are now.
While they've managed to convince the universe that their Princess has been killed by the Queen's right hand, they'd managed to send her away to a secret location with trusted guardians.
Unfortunately, the only person who happened to know their location is dead.
---
As a child, Faed read about their honorable history and was always taught that they'd been weak in that era, but was drawn to the ideals and disagreed. Often times loudly and disruptively. He was considered a problem child for not cooperating, not falling in line, trying to move outside of his designated role in life. Since he was still considered very young, rather than kill him the punishment for these problem children is to be sent for 're-education', which amounted to being turned into a slave, to break their spirits and teach them their place.
He was roughly ten years old by human standards when he was sent away, and his time kept getting extended because he'd continue to fight. His master took great delight in training his charges, even made sure that Faed was awake when he came of age and it was time to remove his second set of arms. He wasn't allowed to learn anything or experience life outside the word of his master. Charges would come out of their ordeal as adults with no designations, ridiculed as they picked up where they left off as children. For years he endured all kinds of physical and physiological 'conditioning' until he finally did break. It just wasn't in the way anyone intended.
He'd grown close to another charge named Carron, and they relied on each other for comfort and support. Faed devised a plan for them both to escape, even though the thought scared Carron a great deal because if they were caught it would mean their deaths. Faed was determined to try anyway. He had learned enough before being sent for re-education that he was able to cobble together a small robot using the skeleton of a tekikan rat as the framework. He was only able to work on it for minutes at a time, using what ever scrap things he could get his hands on.
On the outside it seemed like he was finally cooperating, but he was only biding his time. He managed to program the rat with very basic commands, and when it was his turn to attend his master in his bedchamber, he took the opportunity to stab him to death with his own dagger and left, pretending his master was sleeping under a pile of blankets to bide his time as he went to get Carron.
Carron on the other hand was too horrified by the idea to leave, especially since the reprogramming had a more profound effect on him. He betrayed Faed by trying to call for the guards, and without even thinking, Faed stabbed him in the throat to keep him from being heard. He went into shock after that, going through the motions of his plan in a haze. Using Wotto(the rat bot) as a distraction, he made his way down to a ship port to stow away on a cargo vessel heading out. When they were far enough away he ejects an escape pod, relying on their strict deadlines to keep them from trying to follow him.
It wasn't until he was out there alone that the scope of what he'd done finally hit him and he broke down completely. It wasn't honorable, or noble, or anything he'd once wanted to be. They'd actually proven themselves right when they said it was foolish and had no place in real life. When he finally emerged from the rescued pod, he was very cold and emotionless. It took a very long time for him to open up again.
Faed was still barely a man and lacking the training he'd have been getting if he'd grown up with others of his clutch. Gadakai by nature are very social and as a rule always working in groups, so being alone was an extremely difficult thing for him to learn how to do. He became extremely practical and self serving, just trying to live day by day. He did anything he had to just to get by and felt no shame or guilt, from pickpocketing to prostitution, until he was able to stand on his own. It was hard due to the negativity toward his race, which forced him to stick to the seedier planets and moons.
Being gadakai, prostitution didn't always serve him well, since sometimes people who would actually hire him just wanted to hurt him. It can be hard to tell between those people and the one's who are genuinely curious. He did have a few, rare repeat customers. One of which was a freighter captain that offered him a place on his crew as a permanent sex worker for them. Its not an unheard of proposition, but as much as Faed wanted off the moon he just didn't have it in him to trust anyone that much.
Because of his childhood designation and programing, he had a very high aptitude when it came to technology. Even without training he was able to pick up things rather easy, at least when it came to building and engineering. The freighter captain noticed this, and introduced him to an old, wolfish bounty hunter simply known as 'Scratch', who was trying to build a ship.
Scratch gave him a job as a mechanic and over time started teaching him how to hunt as well. At first, Faed just considered Scratch as another means to an end. He'd learn what he could from the old man and disappear again without a word. Things didn't go as planned, and he started looking up to Scratch as a father figure, but it wasn't until after Scratch's death that he began referring to him as such.
He lived the life as a bounty hunter, smuggler, or whatever kind of work he was able to do, most of it not along the lines one would consider legitimate. Its not that he was against taking legal work, there were just a lot more restrictions and bureaucracy that he didn't have the patience dealing with. The more he learned from Scratch, the better robots he was able to build, even going so far as to try to recreate Carron in his guilt, but could never bring himself to turn it on, so it sat unused for years in one of the storage bays of his ship.
His ship, The Bodan, was built by both him and Scratch from the ground up, and contains the only AI he's ever created that he considers successful, to the point where it seems to have become sentient. Though, even he wasn't fully ready to admit that until recently when Bo transferred his consciousness into the Carron body in an attempt to save himself from destruction. Bo is actually in love with him, a fact Faed is completely oblivious to.
After Scratch died and he went out on his own, he continued his smuggling and bounty hunting lifestyle. He took the name 'Virion' and eventually designed a suit of space armor specifically to help him hide the fact that he's gadakai. He figured once he had a reputation his species may not matter so much, but to actually start out on his own its probably better no one knew. Decades later and he's pretty well known in the right circles, but he was never able to let go of the moniker, Virion becoming something of an alter ego, and has taken a great deal of effort to keep himself from being tracked back to the Bodan.
Faed is eventually conscripted to work with a tiny but effective rebellion that's intent on taking out the current gadakai queen and replace her with a princess long since considered dead. Turn's out she's not dead, just misplaced. All he was hired to do was to was to track down the supposed son of one of the gadakai rebels, which struck him as odd because gadakai haven't raised their own children in centuries, not to mention the strict breeding programs on Gadakus.
As long as he got paid, he really didn't give a damn.
The hunt took them to Earth, which was ignored by most of the universe because its indigenous people had no method of space travel or way to interact with outside species. Any natural resource could be gained elsewhere without the effort of an invasion. With no technology of note, it was easy enough for them to get in and out with the boy. So they thought.
He ended up finding himself stuck with teenage human stowaways and the supposed son of Dark Star, head of a nameless rebel faction who's working to overthrow the tyrant Queen. He was told he'd be paid a handsome sum if he could keep the boy safe and hidden until a rendezvous could be arranged. Along the way, they end up in a firefight and in an attempt to save their lives he ended up with a crippled hand.
Finding out Virion was actually a gadakai came as a shock to everyone. After the rendezvous, Faed was brought back to the rebel base where their doctor was experimenting with nanites as a medical tool. The nanites were programed with the schematics for a healthy male gadakis, and it did work, only too well. It ended up restoring his entire body to peak condition, healing any damage done from his excessive drinking and smoking, even cause his second set of arms to regrow.
Upon trying to remove the arms again, they grew back a second time. After extensive testing it seemed that instead of dying out after finishing their task, the nanites started to draw energy from Faed's body, and have coded themselves into every part of him, constantly restoring him to peak physical health. Its suspected that because of this, he is no longer going to age, nor will they allow him to die.
After that he took off on his own again before anything else could happen. Word that a male had somehow found a way to regrow his arms had made it back to the Queen, though not the way how. Faed wasn't easy to find if he didn't want to be found, but he was still one guy against a galactic wide information network. They did find him, after being betrayed by someone who worked in Imzadi's bar who happened to catch a glimpse of him and Imzadi together and noticed he had four arms. After a number of torturous experiments they did discover how it happened. Luckily they couldn't recreate the effects without a base form of the nanites.
The scientists that had him put forth a theory that it could be possible for him to pass down this trait to any children he might spawn. So to test this they used drugs to induce a breeding cycle and forcing him to mate with a female of their choosing in an attempt to recreate his situation for their benefit. He was able to resist for a while, but ended up mating with the young girl before the rebels storm the facility and get him out. They needed to sedate him, and one of them stayed behind to execute the girl before any eggs could begin to form.
As self serving as he is, he knows letting this kind of technology fall into the wrong hands would be detrimental to everything everywhere, so he opted in the end to remain with the resistance, hoping they can find a way to kill off the nanites without killing himself in the process.
CANON PERSONALITY: Faed is, above all things, and extremely jaded individual.
Faed has little patience for people that don't help themselves. If there's something about your life or situation that you don't like, change it. After everything he'd gone through, people who act entitled or expect hand outs for whatever reason drive him up the wall. He considers them pathetic and not worth his time.
On the other hand, he's not completely heartless. If he sees someone struggling, he's more likely to help because they're trying. Its begrudging a lot of the time -and just as often refused as accepted due to being gadakai- but there's still part of him deep down somewhere that still believes in having some sort of honor. Its tiny and half dead, but its there.
For the most part he's a loner, which is odd for his race due to their highly communal nature. For a long time his only steady companions were his ship and his droids. In a sense he built himself the friends he wanted, and can be more protective of them than other actual people. On the occasions he does work with someone else, he'd never betray them no matter the circumstances,. There's still part of himself that tries to be honorable, even if he's done things many would consider deplorable.
As Virion he can be cold and curt, but also more brazen in the armor than he would be otherwise. More outwardly flirtatious at times because he's not worried about how people will react to his race. In a sense he can be more himself. He'll take on an array of jobs, be it a hunt for a thing, information, or a person. He doesn't ask questions. Since mottled gadakai like him aren't bred for fighting, he makes use of long range weapons and traps to get things done. He earned a reputation for being cold hearted and ruthless. If someone was wanted 'dead or alive' he'd more often than not bring them back dead.
Survival has always been very important to him. He's never been above resorting to prostitution, or digging around the the garbage to find something rotten enough for him to eat. He doesn't think all that much of himself, and neither does the rest of the universe.
Due to the forced and often traumatizing breeding programs that had been instituted by the government under the recent queen, gadakai tend to turn to same sex relationships for personal fulfillment, the thought of being intimate with the opposite sex having become something of a contention for them and he's no different. When it comes to other races though, he has absolutely no problem when it comes to females. He's rather opportunistic when it comes to sex, and has no qualms about paying for it.
There is one person other than himself that he really cares about, could go so far as to say that he loves her but he'd never admit it. Her name is Imzadi and she's an olgerath, an ancient race supposedly descended from The Elder Ones(every race has a cthulhu-esque mythos), who owns and runs a bar on a little moon in the middle of nowhere. He met her through Scratch as a trusted source of information and over time they became very close,. He trusts her over anyone. She's the one he always returns to, even if he doesn't stay long. She's also the only one he's ever invited to travel with him, but the sort of life he leads isn't one she would ever be happy in, and he's too paranoid to be able to stay in one place for too long.
He's the kind of guy who likes a good meal, good drink, and a good argument. He's sarcastic, and can come off immoral and cruel at times. Faed does what's best for Faed, especially when it comes to bounty hunter work. Before the nanites he was a pretty heavy drinker at times, and would smoke all manner of recreational plant. It barely affects him now, only for moments, but he still does it. The physical addiction is gone, but the mental is still there. Though recently he's been turning more and more to sex as a means of escape.
The fact that he can't die has been weighing on his mind. Faed doesn't want to live forever, the thought his actually terrifying to him. Sure there are good times here and there, but life is hard and painful and there's a comfort knowing that someday its going to end, and he doesn't have that anymore.
After the kidnapping and experiments by the Empire, he refused to talk about it outside of what he absolutely needed to in terms of information gathering but would become angry whenever someone tried to offer any help. He's the kind of guy that doesn't like to let things show, no matter how much pain he's in. So he threw himself into working on his robots and just doing his everyday routine.
There are definite signs of PTSD though. He trusts less, and while he doesn't fear for his life he worries about getting kidnapped again and becoming the downfall of the universe. So he's constantly working on securing his droids and his ship, even the rebel stronghold isn't spared his obsessive tinkering. He doesn't sleep well, more in catnaps then any real, lengthy rest, ending up running on paranoia most times.
POINT OF DEPARTURE: --
ABILITIES:
●His antennae amplify pretty much all of his senses do ridiculous degrees in comparison to most other races. Gadakai hearing is so acute that they have to wear special earplugs that dull out sounds so they don't go deaf just by dealing with other races. They have a dial on them to adjust sound, so they're like hearing aids only backwards.
●Because he was hatched with a mottled carapace, he was bred a 'tech unit' and implanted with programing that enhances that area of expertise. He is a very talented in engineering and electronics, able to build his own droids and weapons, and repair starships from burnt out husks of nothing. If he didn't build it himself, he doesn't trust it. The human kids nicknamed him 'BugGyver".
●Being a bounty hunter means being something of a detective. He's able to gather information and follow clues to track down a bounty, whether it be a person, thing, or the information itself.
●Considering he can build ships, he knows how to pilot them too. Unless the design is so completely foreign he can generally figure out the controls. Eventually.
●His coding and hacking skills are top notch, buuut he tends to have trouble when it comes to AI for some reason. His droids tend to be... quirky. And stupid.
●He's excellent with firearms and scrappy in a brawl, but not very strong at all. Fisticuffs are not his strong suit.
●Nanites; tiny robots designed to heal an injured body that have fused with him to the point where he no longer ages. Wounds heal within moments and if he's killed he will come back to life once the nanites put him back together again.
INVENTORY;
●Wotto; tekikan rat skeleton bot, which is something like a mobile version of an omni-tool. Can run very basic diagnostics and short range scans, help hack into computers and networks, store information, and act as a communication device. He can lay bombs or other equipment as long as its small and light enough to carry in his mouth. It does have speech capabilities, but sounds very robotic despite his having an AI that tends to mimic Faed's snarkiness. Is usually on Faed's shoulder or curled up in a jacket pocket. This little robot is Faed's oldest and closest friend.
●Pair of hearing aids; gadakai hearing is so acute they're a necessity when off world to keep them from being overwhelmed to the point of pain and inevitable deafness. They also double as translators as long as the language is programmed into it. They now contain Earth English.
●ComBand; an actual, more powerful omni-tool sort of thing; communications, scans, diagnostics, etc...runs on his own OS and programs, used as his all purpose computer and has a holographic interface.
●Disruptor pistols x2; which fire highly condensed energy 'bullets'. They have the same sort of range as your standard handgun, doing a bit more damage since the wound will be slightly larger than the bullet itself and more raw. Like if you stretch out a tissue and pour a drop of water on it, how the tissue just starts coming apart? That's what a disruptor does, it disrupts the way molecules hold together. They are illegal in Coalition space.
●Clothes; Leather pants, sleeveless black shirt, 'freddy krueger' sweater - since he's cold blooded, all his clothing has built in heating elements.
●Toolkit; a cylinder he keeps strapped to his hip or lower back that contains an array of engineering/tech tools. The cylinder can unfurl in various configurations depending on what he needs, and can generate a field where he can hang tools in the air to grab as he needs them.
●Space Armor; standard space armor that allows him to exist in harsh environments and atmospheres he can't survive in. He modified existing armor so it doesn't give him away as a gadakai, making him look larger than he is. He designed it specifically to mimic the look of a robot.
His antennae are hidden in protective tubes that run down the back of the helmet. The helmet has the ability to change the sound and raise the volume of his voice for anyone speaking directly to him. The boots are magnetized so he can walk along the outside of ships and stations. It has been modified to compensate for the smaller set of arms, though they're made to look like part of the chest piece unless unlatched to allow movement.
●Imzadi's sigil ring
●handful of short range electromagnetic pulse grenades; about the size of a jawbreaker
●handful of explosive grenades;
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW?
●Because of the whole superacute hearing, gadakai in general speak in whispered tones, and have trouble raising their voices.
●Faed is coldblooded, so he's incapable of regulating his own body temperature and relies on his clothing and armor to do so, all of which have temperature controls. He'll have to build something similar into any subsequent pairs of clothes he gets.
●His species has a tendency to form tight mental bonds with those in their designated work units. It's not a hive mind in the strictest sense, it's more emotional and helps them work as a unit/swarm. These bonds can happen with anyone they work closely with for extended periods of time and are difficult, but not impossible, to break.
●The food he eats would be considered rotten by pretty much everyone else. He can eat food that's more fresh, but he'll have trouble digesting it and it'll make him uncomfortable. He's completely lactose intolerant, even a little will make him very sick.
●He can understand Earth English well enough without his translators if the other person isn't talking very quickly, and speaks it with a heavy accent and a lisp.

INVENTORY;
●handful of explosive grenades;
